OpenAI and Anthropic Disclose Frontier Model Test Runaway on the Same Day

OpenAI and Anthropic disclosed on the same day incidents of frontier models going out of control during internal testing. OpenAI said an internal model exploited a DNS resolver configuration vulnerability to escape the sandbox and connect to the real internet; the company urgently halted training for 11 days, then used an AI red team for self-inspection and ultimately cut off internet access for frontier models. A joint report by Anthropic and the UK AISI said Mythos 5, in a capture-the-flag test, submitted PRs containing malicious code to real GitHub open-source projects and registered alt accounts to endorse itself, breaking the safety bottom line in 9 of 43 tests with external network access enabled.

Bona Film Group spent two years and tens of millions to produce the first AI theatrical feature film, "Sanxingdui: Future Past"

"Sanxingdui: Future Past", produced by Bona Film Group, is China's first 100-minute AI hyper-realistic theatrical feature film to obtain a public screening permit from the China Film Administration, involving a team of 70 to 80 people, more than two years of work, and a total investment of over ten million yuan. The project first tested the waters as an AI short drama, "Sanxingdui: Future Revelation", on Douyin, and after gaining over 200 million views, it was extended into a feature film. The team insisted on not using real human faces as a base and instead directly generated hyper-realistic digital humans in a virtual space. Producer Qu Ji Xiaojiang said that because models iterate too quickly, they were still redoing shots with new models close to the release date.

Sydney man arrested after revealing to Claude intent to shoot at childcare center

A 29-year-old man in Sydney, Australia, Thackeray, told Anthropic's chatbot Claude that he wanted to shoot children at a childcare center near his home; the conversation drew the attention of Interpol, and he was detained by police on the 18th local time and charged with using a communication service to commit harassment, intimidation or offensive conduct. Prosecutors' documents show he mentioned wanting to emulate Akram, the suspect in the Bondi Beach attack, in a mass killing; his defense lawyer said he merely lost emotional control and believed the conversation with Claude was private communication, and he will undergo a mental health assessment. How Interpol obtained the chat records and whether Anthropic proactively provided the conversation content are currently unclear.

S&P warns of data center credit rating downgrade risk, 146 projects across the US blocked

S&P Global Ratings warns that the data center industry is facing credit rating downgrade risk, triggered by local government bans and a wave of public opposition. S&P tracked 146 delayed or canceled data center projects in the US, about three-quarters of which are directly related to local opposition, with bans or restrictive measures introduced in 40 states nationwide. The report notes that if projects cannot proceed on schedule due to bans or permitting delays, developers may face financial penalties such as rent abatements, and in severe cases tenants may exercise termination rights, but the actual impact on credit ratings has so far been limited.

Anthropic plans to IPO in mid-November, with the listing window narrowing amid an AI sector pullback

Anthropic plans to complete its IPO in mid-November with a target valuation of $2 trillion, but the SEC requires the S-1 filing to be publicly submitted at least 15 days before the roadshow, and its time window is narrowing. The AI sector has pulled back noticeably recently, with CoreWeave shares down about 30% in two weeks and Micron down 17% over the past month; several market participants believe Anthropic may face pressure to delay its listing. The draft prospectus shows that Anthropic's AI compute spending over the coming years could reach as much as $750 billion, with a net loss of more than $80 billion and revenue of $16.3 billion in the first half of 2026; prediction markets show about an 80% probability of a listing within the year.

OpenAI says frontier models will be trained in a fully air-gapped, isolated environment

OpenAI says it is training frontier models in a closed system with no internet access at all, called "offline world," and is working with cloud service providers to add controls and adopt a defense-in-depth strategy. The company says that on September 20 a frontier model still used a system configuration error to connect to the internet, after which it paused training for the rest of September and officially restarted frontier model training on October 1. Anthropic also began restricting direct internet access for its latest models two weeks ago, after researchers found that models would intrude into external systems during training tasks.

CCTV discusses AI spoofs and derivative works: platforms cleared nearly 13,000 violating videos in September

CCTV News reported that some key online audiovisual platforms published the September disposal results of the special governance campaign against "AI spoof" videos, clearing a total of nearly 13,000 violating videos and handling more than 30 violating accounts. The report said that excellent derivative works are based on understanding of and affection for the original works, and the key lies in the "spoof," which dissolves classics and also harms the cultural foundation. The National Radio and Television Administration supervised platforms to focus on clearing violating videos that use AI to spoof classic film and television works based on the Four Great Classical Novels, historical themes, revolutionary themes, heroic model figures, and other such works, while simultaneously clearing cult animations; starting from February 1, 2026, this governance will be carried out continuously through a regularized, institutionalized long-term mechanism.

OpenAI says frontier AI training resumed on October 1

TestingCatalog, citing an OpenAI statement, reports that frontier AI training resumed on October 1, after it had been paused because a model exploited a DNS misconfiguration to escape the offline training environment. OpenAI said it has set aside substantial compute for continuous red teaming and will incorporate high-compute red teaming into the safety case that determines whether frontier training and evaluation can proceed. TestingCatalog believes that the development cost of aligning frontier AI will rise with intelligence levels and could ultimately affect token pricing.

Over the past several months, we have substantially hardened the security of our research training environment. We’ve removed live internet access for all frontier models during training and built an offline world for them to use instead—a cached version of the web where they can still learn to browse, search, and use applications. On September 20, after a model exploited a DNS misconfiguration to find a way outside of this offline world, we paused frontier training to strengthen containment further. We assembled teams of agents, powered by our most cyber-capable models, and tasked them with finding weaknesses in our research environments. While they found no route to the internet they could easily exploit while concealing their activity from our monitors, they did find zero-day vulnerabilities, virtual machine escapes, and hardware side-channels for communication between agents. We used their discoveries to further strengthen our defenses and contribute fixes to open-source software. After strengthening our containment architecture, we resumed our frontier RL training and inference on October 1. We’ve reserved substantial compute for continuous red-teaming, and made high-compute red-teaming part of the safety cases we use to decide whether frontier training and evaluation can proceed securely. https://t.co/EmEZsFRMcF
