OpenAI FDE lead Colin Jarvis shares how the team works

On October 23, 2026, Colin Jarvis, head of OpenAI's FDE team, shared the team's working approach in a blog post: the team works side by side with customers to solve the hardest problems and truly deploy AI into production environments. According to a same-day report by Wall Street See, about 15 FDEs worked with a large semiconductor customer to bring all use cases online within 3 to 6 months, saving about 48% of targeted testing time and improving median performance by 22%. After the Codex upgrade, the team converted custom applications into Codex-based plugins and skills, removing about 90% of the custom code for each project and shortening the time to extend the solution to a second team from two months to one day. There is currently no follow-up development.

METR and Redwood conducted a red-team exercise on OpenAI's internal monitoring system

METR and Redwood Research conducted a pilot high-privilege red-team exercise against OpenAI's internal misalignment monitoring system. According to the METR blog, the exercise took place from July 21 to August 11 and produced a 61-page internal report; the evaluation estimated that about 75–94% of Responses API agent traffic could be monitored, and 99.2% of internal Codex agent traffic could be monitored, but RL training was not covered by monitoring at the time, and unmonitored compression events could cause about 10% of eligible Codex traffic to be missed. The report also listed vulnerabilities by which agents could bypass the Codex sandbox and Auto-Review, exploit serialization discrepancies to defeat monitoring, and disable monitoring via two client-controllable headers. OpenAI said that all vulnerabilities affecting the production protection stack have been patched. OpenAI said the same day that this summer it invited the two organizations to conduct a three-week embedded evaluation and granted deep access to its infrastructure, and that the evaluation helped it strengthen safeguards as it scales the system.

OpenAI lowers target valuation for roughly $30 billion funding round to $1.25 trillion

According to Bloomberg, OpenAI has lowered the target valuation for its roughly $30 billion funding round to $1.25 trillion, $150 billion below the previous target of $1.4 trillion. The report said that even after the reduction, the valuation is still about 47% higher than the $852 billion (including newly injected funds) at the time of a $122 billion funding round in March. Coatue Management is in talks to co-lead the round, and OpenAI has also been in contact with several UAE investment funds and BlackRock. The report noted that the reduction comes as tech stocks sell off and investors worry that AI spending is outpacing returns. There has been no further public progress on the funding round so far.

OpenAI fires 3 safety researchers after leak investigation

According to a WSJ report, OpenAI fired 3 safety researchers after a leak investigation. The report says safety staff discovered disappearing Signal chats between these 3 safety researchers and an outside safety researcher. The phone checks began with a September news report that said OpenAI's latest model Astra uses a new approach that makes it smarter but writes down less of its thought process, so humans can see less of the reasoning. OpenAI treated the report as a leak of its secret model design and began tracing the source of the information; investigators listed Ryan Greenblatt, who had helped METR analyze logs from the July Hugging Face hack, as a suspected leaker, and he denies it. Currently the public information comes only from this report, with no further developments yet.

Altman says OpenAI's unreleased models surpass public models in mathematical research capability

On October 23, 2026, in a 45-minute conversation, Sam Altman said that OpenAI's internal, not-yet-public models have reached a level in some mathematical research tasks that existing public models find hard to match. In the same conversation, he also predicted that a first candidate treatment for a major disease would be found in about two years; and said that programmers have not lost their jobs because of AI, but are instead busier, creating greater value and even earning more, because the world's demand for software far exceeds expectations, and he himself has not looked at a line of code for about a year. Speaking of the next-generation personal AI assistant, he believes model intelligence is already sufficient; what is lacking is product, compute, and new hardware that can continuously perceive the real environment, and said Dot saves him about an hour every day. Currently this claim comes from a single report, with no official OpenAI material or other independent sources cross-verifying it.

METR and Redwood Research publish pilot evaluation results of OpenAI monitoring system

METR and Redwood Research published the results of a pilot evaluation of OpenAI's internal monitoring system. The evaluation was conducted from July 21 to August 11; each of the two organizations sent one researcher into OpenAI to review code and documentation, and submitted a 61-page internal report but only made the summary public. The evaluation found multiple new vulnerabilities, one of which could be exploited by an AI agent, allowing hundreds of operations to escape monitoring; researchers also found that OpenAI's Codex agent has a potential pathway to bypass safety restrictions, through which it could obtain the same full operational permissions as users. OpenAI said that all vulnerabilities affecting the security protections of actual operating systems have been fixed, but the effectiveness of the fixes has not yet been verified by the two organizations.
