OpenAI plans to merge ChatGPT's Chat and Work tabs

AI summary

OpenAI plans to simplify the ChatGPT app design by merging the Chat and Work tabs, and has notified users via email. After the merge, users can bring in files and plugins in the same place, allowing ChatGPT to build websites, create presentations, or perform web operations on their behalf; Codex will remain in the desktop app's mode selector, but will share the same quota pool with ChatGPT. This interface adjustment will first roll out to a small number of users, and the shared token quota for ChatGPT and Codex will take effect for Plus, Pro, and Business users in December.

Following the introduction of the new Work experience in ChatGPT earlier this year, OpenAI plans to simplify the app’s design by unifying its Chat and Work Tabs. The company has started warning ChatGPT users about the change by email (via TechCrunch), and as part of this transition, Codex, which will remain available via the app’s mode selector, will share the same usage allowance pool as ChatGPT.

After Anthropic previously merged Claude Cowork into the app’s main chat interface in September, it probably made sense for OpenAI to follow suit and simplify how ChatGPT works. However, this will likely remain a constant challenge for companies trying to build an AI “super app.”

“This will enable you to move from exploring an idea to having ChatGPT carry it through, all in one place,” OpenAI said in its email to ChatGPT users about the integration of ChatGPT Work into the main chat mode. “You can bring in your files and plugins and ask ChatGPT to build a website, create a presentation, or do things for you on the web, while reviewing and guiding its work. Codex will remain a separate experience in the ChatGPT desktop app,” the email continued.

OpenAI plans to first roll out this UX change to a limited pool of users before making it broadly available. As for the shared token allowance for ChatGPT and Codex, it will go into effect in December for ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Business users.

“We’re preparing carefully for this transition to help prevent disruption to your workflows. We expect most users won’t need to wait for their usage to reset more often than they do now,” the company said on a support page.
