Instagram's video editor Edits launches a macOS version, supporting AI agents in generating rough cuts via MCP

AI summary

Instagram's standalone video editor Edits is now available as a free macOS app, adding 4K export and providing an MCP interface for all in-app tools, which agents can call to generate rough cuts. Creators can use Meta's Muse or other agents to process videos in the Downloads folder, then open the generated project files in Edits to continue editing manually. The app only supports Macs with M1 or newer Apple chips, requires an Instagram account login, and does not yet support editing the same project on both mobile and desktop.

The Verge reported on November 5, 2026, that Instagram’s standalone Edits video editor is now available as a free macOS app, adding 4K exports and support for AI agents that can use its desktop tools through the Model Context Protocol (MCP).

Matthew Simari, Instagram’s head of product management for Edits, said the desktop release includes an MCP interface for all tools within the app, and that creator requests for a desktop version and AI plans both factored into the expansion. The protocol provides the route through which an agent can use those tools. Creators can choose Meta’s Muse or another agent to edit and adjust videos, then alternate between agent-driven and manual editing.

A rough cut illustrates that handoff. A creator can ask Muse to use the Edits MCP on a video stored in the Downloads folder. The agent accesses the interface, makes the tool calls and creates the rough cut. The resulting project file then opens in Edits, where the creator can continue with manual editing. The process gives the editor an agent-assembled starting point without giving up control of the subsequent cut.

Instagram added an AI creative assistant to mobile Edits in September 2026. It uses Instagram account data and metrics, including views and retention, to offer video suggestions and feedback.

Desktop Editing and Publishing

Instagram’s official Edits for Desktop page describes an interface familiar to mobile users, with more room and power for complex projects. Its multi-track timeline includes keyframes for dynamic transitions, audio waveforms for beat-accurate cuts, and color wheels and curves for grading. Those tools provide the manual side of the workflow after an agent has prepared material, or for creators who prefer to edit entirely themselves.

The app provides access to Instagram’s licensed and royalty-free audio libraries, imports for custom LUTs and font files, and unlimited automatic captions. Meta says keyboard shortcuts can be carried over from another editor, while audio and text styles saved in the mobile app are accessible on desktop.

Creators can publish directly to Instagram without downloading and re-uploading a video. Multiple aspect ratios let work be prepared for different destinations, and exports carry no watermark. That combination keeps Instagram publishing inside the app while allowing finished videos to be shared elsewhere.

Hardware Requirements and Project Limits

Edits is available only on macOS and requires a Mac with Apple silicon, specifically M1 or later. Users must sign in with an Instagram account. There is no Windows or Linux version.

Project mobility remains limited. Creators cannot yet edit the same project across mobile and desktop. Meta says it is working on cross-platform project editing and plans weekly updates to the desktop app.

The Mac release joins agent-generated rough cuts, manual finishing and direct publishing in one desktop workflow. It does not yet create a continuous editing process between phone and Mac, so Meta’s planned cross-platform project support remains central to how creators can move work between the two versions.
