Google Gemini Upgraded: Generated Documents and Spreadsheets Can Be Edited Directly in Chat

Phoenix Tech News, October 30 (Beijing Time) — According to tech media outlet The Verge, Google has added file preview and editing features to Gemini, allowing users to generate, view, and modify documents directly within the chat interface without leaving the Gemini app.

The file types supported in this update include PDFs, Google Docs documents, Google Sheets spreadsheets, slides, Markdown, TXT text, and code files. The new features are available to all Gemini users starting today. Among them, PDF preview and editing are supported on both the web and mobile versions, while other file types are currently supported only on the web version.

Google says users can expand documents to full-screen mode for editing, or select text within a file to ask Gemini questions or request changes. For example, after selecting a spreadsheet, users can directly ask Gemini to convert it into a chart.

Earlier this year, Gemini already supported generating and downloading files. This update further adds in-app editing, allowing users to continue adjusting generated files within the same chat interface.

Previously, users could also edit files through the Gemini integration in Google Workspace apps, for example by using the Gemini sidebar within Google Docs. This update brings file editing directly into the Gemini chat interface. Anthropic also launched a similar feature earlier this year, allowing users to generate and edit documents and presentations in Claude chats. (Editor/Yu Lei)
