Claude Code background subagents now use Haiku 5.5 to write status lines
Claude Code's background subagents update their status line every 30 seconds, and previously each update required re-reading the entire conversation. Now Haiku 5.5 generates the status line from brief notes, reducing the cost of each update by about 99%, while the subagents themselves still use their own models. Usage for sessions that include background subagents drops by about 5%, allowing roughly 6% more prompts within the same quota; the feature is available to most Pro, Max, and Ultra users and all Team and Enterprise users, and requires upgrading to v2.1.316+.
