Cailian Press, October 30 (Editor: Zhao Hao) — Canadian AI model developer Cohere is advancing a large-scale funding round at a valuation of $20.5 billion, roughly three times what it was a year ago.

The startup said on Thursday that it has completed the first closing of this round, with the total amount expected to reach up to $5 billion.

The company said it has received funding commitments from investors including the Canadian government and Nvidia, among them the previously disclosed $600 million investment from European retail giant Schwarz Group.

The Canadian government also announced on its official website that it has agreed to invest up to C$1.6 billion (about $1.14 billion) in Cohere.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Cohere plans to keep its headquarters in Canada and is expected to invest about $1.2 billion in the country by 2030 to build new computing infrastructure.

"Canada's investment in Cohere is an investment in choice, security, and our ability to choose how we live," Carney wrote in a statement.

Once completed, this round will become by far the largest private financing in Canadian history.

Cohere did not disclose how much of its $5 billion funding target has been formally secured; Chief Financial Officer Francois Chadwick said the first closing already covers "most" of it.

Chadwick also noted that the $20.5 billion valuation is a pre-money valuation and does not include the funds raised in this round.

Cohere was founded in 2019 and is headquartered in Toronto, and has consistently focused on selling customizable AI tools to enterprises rather than to consumers.

Like other major competitors in the AI market, Cohere is developing AI agents as well as specialized tools for coding, search and cybersecurity.

Chadwick said Cohere has attracted more customers to its platform by emphasizing security and AI operating efficiency, meeting customers' needs to cope with rising computing costs and AI-driven hacker attacks.

Cohere said that as of the end of September, its annual recurring revenue had grown more than 165% year over year.

"This investment will help us accelerate that vision and strengthen our ability to attract world-class talent, build frontier AI systems, and develop secure, sovereign technology in Canada for the benefit of customers worldwide," said Aidan Gomez, Cohere's chief executive.
