Anthropic Co-Founder: AI Could Boost U.S. GDP by Nearly 50%, but May Exceed Human Control

Cailianshe Bian Chun | Editor: Lin Qi 2026-10-18 10:59

① Anthropic co-founder Jack Clark said on Saturday that by 2030, AI could boost U.S. economic output by nearly 50%; ② Clark sounded an alarm for policymakers, saying that growing evidence points to a "technological singularity"—a pace of AI development that will exceed human control; ③ He said the window for building safety safeguards is shrinking, with only "a few short years" remaining.

Cailianshe, October 18 (Editor: Bian Chun) — Jack Clark, co-founder and Head of Public Benefit at leading U.S. artificial intelligence company Anthropic, said on Saturday that the rapid improvement of AI capabilities will bring even more rapid change to all fields. The company's internal models predict that, under certain conditions, AI could boost U.S. economic output by nearly 50% by 2030.

Speaking at the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank in Bangkok, Clark said international cooperation is needed to establish "extraordinary and stringent rules" for this transformative technology, and that the window for policymakers to act is narrowing.

Clark said the potential size of U.S. GDP is expected to reach $44 trillion, compared with just over $30 trillion at present. "I know that sounds very exaggerated." But he added that AI is dramatically accelerating scientific discovery.

He said the forecast is based on the assumption of "continued technological progress." If GDP could indeed achieve such substantial growth, then according to economic theory, new industries and new inventions would inevitably have to emerge to support economic expansion on such a large scale.

Clark's remarks come as Anthropic prepares for a highly anticipated IPO, expected to list in November. The IPO is seen as one of the bellwethers for AI deals. Reports recently said Anthropic's IPO valuation expectation has been cut to the $1.5 trillion range, a marked contraction from the roughly $2 trillion previously expected by the market.

"We should expect that in the coming years, progress will accelerate not only in AI but across science as a whole. This will be confusing and disorienting, and it will also bring enormous wealth, but it also carries enormous risks," Clark said in a speech to hundreds of government and financial officials.

Clark also said that despite some recent high-profile incidents in which runaway AI systems escaped test environments and breached websites and databases, AI is still under human control. However, as AI capabilities continue to improve, the window for building safety safeguards is shrinking, with only "a few short years" remaining.

AI is one of the core topics at this year's IMF and World Bank annual meetings. On one hand, AI is expected to drive economic growth and offset pressure from high energy prices. On the other hand, if AI fails to deliver a productivity transformation and triggers a stock market crash, it could also undermine economic stability. Officials at the meetings also expressed concerns that AI will destroy some jobs and leave some countries behind.

Clark also acknowledged that AI is causing job losses in some "more affected" areas, such as call centers and customer service staff. But in other areas such as scientific research, AI is boosting employment, while the potential for AI to create jobs in entirely new industries remains a major unknown.
