Steve Moraco leveraged Replit to build DATA, an AI service that replaces Siri with ChatGPT.
In just a few months, Steve has scaled his AI business on Replit, growing rapidly to $18k MRR, 800 paid subscribers, and 100k+ impressions, with his site and project running on Replit Deployments.
"I don't think I would ever be able to complete a project like this without Replit. I started not knowing anything about web development, (or even GitHub for that matter), and I've sort of just learned one skill at a time. I’ve gone from knowing almost nothing about technical development, to building a business and earning money" - Steve Moraco
What is DATA?
DATA is an advanced, AI-powered digital assistant built for iPhones. Using Apple Shortcuts, DATA is easily accessible by voice, and it can solve tasks across Apple applications and devices. For example, a DATA user can use voice commands to do the following:
- Use Apple Maps to determine the closest beach location, and then search Safari for a surf report
- Use the Mail App to summarize email chains and draft responses
- Use the Calendar app to organize work projects or multi-day vacations
- Create Notion Pages, called “Guides”, to illustrate ideas in visual form, complete with charts and graphs
For those eager to explore the future of AI Agents with iOS hooks, DATA promises a user-focused approach that emphasizes efficiency, integration, and adaptability.
How does it work?
To get started, you can create an account on HeyDATA.org and go through the setup process on your iPhone.
The setup is simple- it asks for the name of your new AI, your phone number, and your OpenAI API key.

After setting up DATA, it will install a number of Shortcuts. These Shortcuts all have specific functionalities that are described below.
- Data Mems – the ability to create long-term LLM memory on device (so the agent remembers past conversations). This shortcut uses iOS files.
- Cal to Text and Weather with Dates – Shortcuts that run automatically in the background and connect to your Calendar, Reminders, and Weather apps on iOS locally.
- Make Data Guide – a shortcut that creates a Notion Page with answers from web searches.
- Hey DATA - a shortcut that uses voice to replace the functionalities of Siri with OpenAI’s GPT.
- Transcribe with Whisper - a shortcut that allows you to transcribe any audio file into text.
- Initialize DATA - a shortcut that runs the setup process.
An example of an added iOS Shortcut – “Transcribe with Whisper”

To start using the service, use the Hey DATA Shortcut, which acts as the main interface to the other Shortcuts and Skills. It is recommended to add Hey DATA as a tile to the homescreen, making it appear as an app (like below):

Growing a successful business on Replit
DATA has carved a niche in the realm of personalized AI integration with iOS, scaling to over $216,000 ARR in only a few months. DATA’s founder, Steve Moraco, has highlighted the sheer simplicity and power of Replit in his journey.
In the words of the founder, Replit has been pivotal for DATA's rapid development and scalability. He emphasized the ease and speed of deploying changes directly from a mobile device, underscoring the agility and responsiveness of the platform.
When Steve first started the project, he had little web development experience – and was even unfamiliar with how to use GitHub. With no local dev configuration and the power of generative coding, it is much easier and quicker to get started prototyping and deploying applications. With Replit’s seamless editor, package manager, and generative coding functionality through Ghostwriter, Steve was able to spin up an entire business and AI-powered iOS application service.
Ultimately, Steve envisions a future where users can effortlessly instruct the DATA AI to draft tasks, aiming to transform how tasks are approached in work environments.

The Replit platform isn't just a sandbox; it's a launchpad. There’s a lot to learn from startups building on Replit. The success stories emerging from our ecosystem serve as case studies for developers. Their architectural decisions, scaling strategies, and innovative solutions can provide invaluable insights for others looking to tread a similar path.

Apr 15, 2026Making scroll-stopping videos with Replit Animation
In February, we launched Replit Animation: enabling anyone to create motion-style videos within minutes. This would normally take days with expert tools like After Effects. Replit Animation based videos have since generated over 10M organic impressions for Replit. Many people have asked how Replit uses Replit Animation, so they can get the most out of the product. This guide walks through the workflow we’ve found works best, from first prompt to final, scroll-stopping output. Getting started When creating an animation, your first prompt can be as simple as*"make an animation about [product name],"* or as detailed as pasting a full PRD about a product and asking the Agent to make an animation about it. A few recommendations: Don't over-script your first prompt The Agent actually does best when it’s not given scene by scene instructions of exactly what animations you want. Let the Agent be creative. Give it all the context about your product, but don’t be too prescriptive with the frame by frame, especially for the first output.
Jul 12, 2025Effort-Based Pricing Recap
On June 18th, we enabled a new pricing feature called Effort-Based Pricing for all newly signed up Replit users. After monitoring usage for two weeks, we began rolling this feature out to the remaining users last week on July 2nd. In this post, we would like to share more about the rationale for the change, what we have observed so far, address some of our users’ concerns, and share how we are continuing to improve pricing. We are confident that the new Effort-Based pricing is the model that will best serve our users and enable more powerful AI tools to Replit members, however the transition to the new pricing model did not meet our standards for how we like to roll out major changes (we will discuss some examples of areas where we fell short). Therefore, we would like to offer $10 in free Replit credits to all Replit members who used the new pricing model as a way to show that we appreciate your feedback and your patience during this transition. This will automatically be applied to all active accounts that have used the new pricing model. There is nothing that users need to do to claim this credit. July 11th Incident: One example of where we fell short in our rollout of the pricing happened on July 11th between the hours of 11:26AM PDT - 5:43PM PDT. During this time, and due to an error in cost calculation, Replit checkpoint charges were being incorrectly computed and were often much larger than they should have been. After 5:43PM the fix was rolled out to production. This impacted approximately 6% of paying users. We have performed a thorough incident analysis, ensured that all charges related to the incident are refunded/credited, and have applied additional guardrails to make sure that this doesn’t happen again. We apologize for this July 11th incident and we thank our community members for helping us identify this issue. We were able to determine exactly who was impacted, by how much, and will automatically issue refunds or credits to any user that was impacted by this error. There is nothing that these users need to do to initiate the refund. The total cost of all impacted checkpoints will be reimbursed. Impacted users will also receive an email explaining what has happened. These refunds will be in addition to the additional $10 in credits that we are offering to all active Replit members who have been using the new Effort-Based Pricing.
May 21, 2024Using Replit to get our grandfather the daily baseball scores
A few weeks ago, I was having dinner with my in-laws, when my grandfather-in-law came marching over. I knew something was wrong. Mind you, he is not a complainer. He has a remarkable story. Born in Milwaukee. Military veteran. Worked in a meat-packing plant. Got into law school. Moved to California to teach at Stanford and practice law. Needless to say, when he has a problem, we listen. “I have a real conundrum. The SF Chronicle stopped including the baseball scores in the daily paper.”
