Hyundai Motor Group is moving ahead with its artificial intelligence (AI) data center project in Saemangeum, North Jeolla Province. The group has confirmed investment participation by major affiliates, including Hyundai Motor and Kia, and plans to establish special purpose companies (SPCs) in November. Construction is scheduled to begin in March 2027, with operations targeted for early 2030.

Hyundai Motor Group said on Oct. 30 that five affiliates — Hyundai Motor, Kia, Hyundai Mobis, Hyundai Engineering & Construction and Hyundai AutoEver — had finalized their decisions to invest in the construction and operation of the AI data center.

The project is part of Hyundai Motor Group’s 9 trillion won AI Valley investment plan in Saemangeum.

In September, the group began establishing an SPC for a 200-megawatt (MW) solar power project and initiated the architectural review process for the AI data center. In November, it plans to establish two separate entities: a Data Center SPC responsible for construction and infrastructure development, and a GPU Service SPC responsible for securing high-performance graphics processing units (GPUs) and providing related services.

Hyundai AutoEver confirmed its participation in the GPU Service SPC following board approval. As the group’s IT and software affiliate, it will support AI transformation (AX) across Hyundai Motor Group by leveraging its high-performance computing resource management and platform technologies.

Hyundai Motor Group plans to use the data center as core infrastructure for developing physical AI technologies, including autonomous driving, robotics and manufacturing AI.

For autonomous driving, the facility will serve as a supercomputing center to train AI models using driving data collected from real roads and simulation data generated in virtual environments. In robotics, the group will use digital twin environments to train robot behavior models and advance precision control technologies.

Meanwhile, Hyundai Motor Group held an opening ceremony for its HMG Saemangeum Office at the Future Mobility Tech Center of the Jeonbuk Institute of Automotive Technology (JIAT) in Gunsan, North Jeolla Province, on Oct. 30.

The Saemangeum Office will serve as an on-site hub for managing the investment projects. Dedicated personnel will be stationed there to support land-use permits, construction preparations and coordination with relevant authorities.

Hyundai Motor Group’s Saemangeum AI Valley project comprises an AI data center, a robotics manufacturing cluster, solar power generation, a water electrolysis plant for clean hydrogen production and an AI Hydrogen City.
