Nathan Lambert: Open models help cybersecurity defense

AI summary

Nathan Lambert believes that the balancing role of open models in cybersecurity defense, as well as the current trajectory, is much better than people imagine. He said this is not to deny that open weights will be used for cyberattacks; in his view, all possible AI development paths will be accompanied by a large number of cybersecurity incidents. He seeks to challenge the fatalistic AI doomerism and AI safety narratives surrounding cyber and open models, because credible voices in the cybersecurity community believe that open models are an important force for holding the line over the next 12 months.

Body

The point of this is that the balance of having open models help with cyber defense, and the trajectory we’re on being well more fine than people think.

It’s not that open weights won’t be used in cyber attacks. All possible AI trajectories had many cyber incidents imo.

Like many things I do, I’m trying to challenge the fatalistic, largely ai doom / ai safety discourse around cyber and open models, because there’s a credible part of the cyber community that thinks open models are a big part of holding things together in the next 12 months.
