HardenedLinux Releases SonicBoom: An AI Runtime Framework That Says Goodbye to Manual Tuning

AI summary

The HardenedLinux community-led AI runtime framework SonicBoom has been released under the GPLv3 license, offering a language-agnostic C API and currently officially supporting GNU Guile. It has built-in LLVM MLIR to perform compile-time optimization of computation graphs and directly reuses existing llama.cpp kernels; with kernel optimizations unchanged, it boosts raw performance by 20% on an RTX 3050 8G. v0.0.3 currently supports only CPU and CUDA; the community edition provides only single-node inference, with distributed inference planned for the enterprise edition.

SonicBoom is a brand-new AI runtime framework [0], licensed under GPLv3 and led by the HardenedLinux community. It provides a language-agnostic C API, which means you can bind this library from any language, enabling high-performance AI research and development in any programming language. Currently GNU Guile is the officially supported language, and it also uses Guile's delimited continuations to implement application-level "dead computation elimination," so that only genuinely effective computations enter the runtime.

The runtime includes LLVM MLIR, which will optimize the computation graph again, further removing invalid computation graphs, and use LLVM to generate kernels specifically for the hardware rather than manually optimizing kernels for the hardware.

For AI research, the dynamic language bound at the application layer will provide PyTorch's flexibility as well as single-point inference performance beyond llama.cpp. During actual execution it automatically compiles and optimizes the computation graph, thereby achieving both PyTorch's dynamic-graph flexibility and TensorFlow's static-graph performance.

For inference deployment, no application-layer dynamic language support is needed; models can be loaded directly for efficient inference. But research and production deployment use exactly the same runtime graph compiler optimization stack, which means once you finish development you can deploy directly to production. Deployment cost is compressed into a single .so file of just over 300 MB. No tens-of-gigabytes Python ecosystem.

llama.cpp relies on highly experienced engineers for kernel tuning and has already optimized performance to the extreme. SonicBoom directly reuses llama.cpp's existing kernels; with kernel optimization unchanged, it relies on graph compiler optimization to raise raw performance by 20% (RTX 3050 8G), and this is still increasing.

At present the SonicBoom community edition only provides single-point inference capability; distributed inference capability is planned for the enterprise edition. SonicBoom's ambitions are not limited to LLM inference; it targets PyTorch and will later bring higher performance to image, video, and TTS computation.

Currently SonicBoom only supports CPU and CUDA, with plans to support Vulkan later, offering a better choice for non-NVIDIA users and pure free-software enthusiasts. We currently lack sufficiently diverse GPU benchmark data for optimization, so outside the RTX 3050 the test data may fluctuate; your benchmark data can help us extend the optimizations to more GPUs.

v0.0.3 is currently inviting community contributors to participate in benchmarking on different NVIDIA platforms. We have prepared a very simple script that completes it in one line, but the test may take a relatively long time, so please arrange your time before participating. Every benchmarking contributor will appear in the contributor list. [1]

If you don't currently have the hardware or time to contribute, you are welcome to star, or forward this so more interested friends can join in.

A person who can march in a four-column formation with a military band, smug and self-satisfied, is enough for me to hold him in contempt. He has a brain only by mistake; a single spinal cord would suffice for all his needs. This hotbed of evil in civilized countries should be eliminated as soon as possible. Brave deeds performed under orders, senseless atrocities, and all the abominable antics carried out in the name of patriotism—all these I detest with all my heart. — Einstein
