Karpathy built the HackerTube video site with Claude Opus 5.5 in two hours
Over the weekend, Karpathy used Claude Code together with Opus 5.5 to filter 43 million comments spanning 20 years of Hacker News down to 6,454 frequently recommended long videos, and built HackerTube, which requires no login, in about two hours. The site's cover images are taken directly from the middle frame of each video rather than the optimized thumbnails uploaded by creators, and browsing state is kept in the local browser session. He only manually applied for a YouTube API key from Google Cloud, rented a VPS, and bought a domain in the browser; after that he handed the IP to Claude and let it handle deployment, security hardening, and code optimization.

I was annoyed with YouTube's recommendations so I had Claude filter down 43M comments over 20 years of HN to 6,454 videos that keep being recommended. *Significantly* better viewing experience, ~2 hours with Opus 5.5: https://t.co/JIhXN7OSh1 - Excellent recs without any logins (state is kept in local browser session) - Thumbnail is a representative frame from middle of the video instead of the super duper A/B test hyper-optimized user uploads - Underlying data from the comment analysis as one zip file, point your Claude at it and ask for your own version - HackerTube Longs ✊ A bit more on the process: I use Claude Code (desktop app for Mac), Opus 5.5 on Medium effort as my default. I only talk to Claude and have it do everything, the only "manual work" I helped with in tandem was in the browser (reminiscent of MenuGen): 1) I had to create some kind of API key from Google Cloud UI to query YouTube for video metadata, 2) I booted up a VPS box for serving and 3) I bought the domain name. Once the box was up I gave Claude the IP and told it update, secure, harden, deploy and optimize the code, and it did the whole thing. Many awesome projects that would have normally taken weeks/months even can now be few-shotted for breakfast. What else are we not thinking of.

Karpathy just demonstrated what true personal super-productivity looks like. One person plus one Opus 5.5, and in two hours he washed through forty-three million discussion records and built a complete, live video platform from scratch. Absolutely fucking awesome — no wonder he's called the god Karpathy!!
And what does the future of full-stack development actually look like? I think Karpathy has already shown us — this is the definitive answer, no rebuttals accepted haha.
The background: Karpathy, the god of deep learning education and the father of Software 2.0, got fed up with YouTube's algorithm recommending nothing but garbage clickbait titles, so over a weekend he spent two hours having Claude scan twenty years of Hacker News — forty-three million discussion records — and built HackerTube, a site dedicated to hardcore long-form videos.
The whole product has no login barrier whatsoever, and even the thumbnails are extremely counterintuitive: instead of the flashy covers creators carefully design to lure clicks, it forcibly grabs the exact middle frame of each video.
The more than six thousand four hundred hardcore videos that the geek community repeatedly filtered and left behind over twenty years have all been extracted into pure, high-density long-form content. This is literally a treasure trove for AI learning, holy shit.
But even better than the site itself is his full development workflow. Throughout the entire process he only did three miscellaneous chores in the browser: apply for a YouTube API key on Google Cloud, rent a server, and buy a domain. After the server booted, he just tossed the IP address to Claude, said one line — go deploy, harden security, and optimize the code — and the AI did all the rest of the work.
A complete launch project that used to take an engineering team weeks or even months to slog through, now one person can get it all done over breakfast with a few lines of conversation. AI is no longer an auxiliary tool for writing code — it is the minimal productivity loop that compiles personal ideas directly into usable services. Damn, truly awesome.
