Rokid Glasses 2 First-Hand Experience: In the Second Half of the AI Glasses Race, It's Not Just AI That Matters, but Also "Comfort"

Zhong Jia, 17 hours ago

With AI glasses, competing on specs is not as good as competing on experience.

On October 27, Rokid released its second-generation AI glasses, ROKID Glasses 2, with a starting price of 3,699 yuan (3,199 yuan after national subsidy), now available for pre-order and officially going on sale on November 11.

Leitech (ID: leitech) got the black version of ROKID Glasses 2 in advance and used it for a while. Compared with the previous generation, ROKID Glasses 2 has upgrades in performance, battery life, wearing comfort, and other aspects, and further strengthens AI scenarios.

After years of development and evolution, the various functions of AI glasses are now continuously improving, and the shortcomings that were common in the past are gradually being addressed. As a wearable product, it can take photos, record videos, record audio, navigate, and also serve as a Bluetooth headset for phones and other devices. And all these functions are packed into a lightweight device of just tens of grams.

After getting ROKID Glasses 2, what we were curious about was what changes it could bring to daily life.

Exterior details upgraded, more comfortable to wear

When we first got it, ROKID Glasses 2 felt not much different in appearance from the first generation, but on closer inspection, quite a few differences can still be found.

The more obvious change in appearance is that the upper edge of the frame has gone from thick, hard lines to soft curves, looking less serious and businesslike and more youthful and fashionable. In terms of aesthetics, ROKID Glasses 2 will relatively be more favored by young users.

When wearing them, you can feel that the temples are better designed. Specifically, the temples of ROKID Glasses 2 use a more skin-friendly material, and the touch is softer; pressing with a finger gives a springy feel.

As a result, when we wear them, the pressure the glasses exert on the ears and head is more distributed, without a strong sense of pressure, and long wear does not affect comfort. By comparison, some lower-end AI/smart glasses use harder plastic for the temples and are noticeably uncomfortable to wear.

Wearing comfort is theoretically a very basic metric for wearable devices, but in reality many products do not do this well. For AI glasses, only when they are comfortable to wear can users be willing to use them for a long time, thus making in-depth experience possible. Otherwise, even if such products have powerful specs and functions, users who buy them will most likely let them gather dust.

So although ROKID Glasses 2 is somewhat heavier than the previous generation, it does not affect its "lightweight feel." By the way, one reason for the increased weight of these glasses is that the battery capacity has increased, reaching 263mAh.

More complete AI functions, instantly becoming an everyday all-rounder

ROKID Glasses 2 looks like an ordinary pair of glasses, but a large number of components are integrated inside, laying the foundation at the hardware level for many functions and, combined with AI capabilities, bringing rich functions at multiple levels.

Specifically, the 12-megapixel camera can take photos and record videos; multiple microphones can accurately pick up and record sound; speakers on the temples can play a role in audio scenarios. It can be said that this is a highly integrated product.

First, we experienced the imaging function of these glasses. After putting on the glasses, a short press of the button on the right temple quickly completes photo capture, which is very suitable for snapshots; a long press of this button starts video recording mode.

In low-light scenarios, the brightness of samples shot with ROKID Glasses 2 will decrease, but the overall performance is still acceptable. Objectively speaking, its performance is certainly not as good as imaging phones, but as a wearable device, it is still sufficient for everyday on-the-go recording.

For video recording, it can shoot 4K at 30 frames and also record 2K at 60 frames. The video imaging quality is good, and its stabilization is well done; the footage users record while walking still looks very steady.

For ROKID Glasses 2, the camera also has an important function, which is to serve as a visual input tool for the AI device. For example, in a very common scenario, when we see a flower we do not recognize, we can directly wake the AI assistant and ask; it will take a photo and upload it to the cloud AI, then quickly give an answer.

Second, the audio function of ROKID Glasses 2 is also impressive. When wearing them, you can feel that the sound from the speakers is very clear and accurate, somewhat like wearing bone-conduction headphones, and people around cannot hear the device's sound, so privacy is also protected.

After connecting to the phone app, these AI glasses can become a music player + headset. Listening to music while walking or sitting in the office is very pleasant. In terms of sound quality, its high, mid, and low frequencies all perform well; this exceeds expectations and is also one of the key hardware upgrades of ROKID Glasses 2.

The recording function also corresponds to quite a few AI scenarios, including speech-to-text transcription, AI translation, and more. I tried its meeting summary function. Specifically, voice call recording files can be uploaded to the cloud, and after a while there is a text-and-image summary, which is very convenient. We tested it and found that its recognition of recordings is very accurate, and the summary is also quite good.

Using it to display images certainly won't look good, but showing text and routes during navigation, displaying lyrics while listening to music, and providing visible options when sliding a finger to select menus—these are all quite practical scenarios.

Finally, it should be emphasized that the battery capacity of ROKID Glasses 2 has increased by 25%, and its battery life is good. Specifically, after 20 minutes of navigation, 30 minutes of music, and 30 minutes of photo and video recording, its remaining battery was still over half.

With moderate use, charging once is enough to get through a daytime without much trouble. What's more, it also has a dedicated capsule battery; once attached, it can further extend battery life, making it suitable for heavy users.

As for charging, we did a simple test: when the battery was depleted, charging with the included magnetic charger for 20 minutes brought the battery up to 75%, so the recharging efficiency is still quite high. Overall experience upgraded, the product moves toward a practical route

Overall, compared with the first-generation product, ROKID Glasses 2 has not made any dramatic leaps in functionality; its upgrades are more reflected in the polishing of everyday scenarios, bringing improvements to the actual experience. For example, the upgrade of the temple material makes it more comfortable to wear; the upgrade of the speaker makes the experience better in audio scenarios.

From the experience of the past few days, ROKID Glasses 2 left me with a few main deep impressions: comfortable to wear, not much pressure, and can be used for a long time; AI wakes up quickly, and the Q&A service experience is smooth; the camera and audio have improved noticeably, and can handle everyday functions such as shooting and recording.

As for whether ordinary users need such a pair of AI glasses, in our view, it still depends on their own actual needs. When talking with other colleagues in the Leitech editorial department, many people believed that wearing prescription glasses has already become a daily necessity for many people. Since glasses are unavoidable, there is nothing bad about wearing a pair of feature-rich AI glasses; others believed that AI glasses definitely cannot replace phones, but if paired with a phone, they can free up your hands in some scenarios, which is actually enough to support a reason to buy them.

In our view, ROKID is a player that entered the AI glasses field early, and ROKID Glasses 2 has actually accumulated a lot of technical and product experience. In daily use, the interaction and functions feel very smooth, and there are no nasty bugs or lag. This silky overall experience constitutes a major competitive advantage of the product.
