Google's Project Suncatcher reaches orbit: in-orbit chip lifespan becomes a performance metric
Google's Project Suncatcher prototype satellite entered orbit on October 1 aboard a SpaceX mission and has established a communication link with the ground, to test how commercial AI hardware performs in the space environment. The article notes that in-orbit processors cannot be replaced once they fail, so a chip's value must be measured by the effective compute it can produce before hardware degradation; a study by Slava Turyshev in April 2026 calculated that 1 megawatt of in-orbit compute requires about 5,640 square meters of photovoltaic arrays and 2,500 square meters of radiative cooling surface. Google has completed vibration and proton-beam irradiation tests on the Trillium TPU and plans to conduct a two-star optical link experiment in 2027.
