Nordstjernen, a browser written from scratch in C, releases version 1.0.40
Nordstjernen is a browser written from scratch in C that targets the HTML/CSS standards, and its Sol Explorer version has been updated to 1.0.40, adding Shared Web Workers, ElementInternals, hardware VP9/AV1/HEVC decoding via GStreamer, and an optional memory-safe Rust IPC parser. In the Web Platform Tests (October 2026), it passed 91.5% (151,974/166,164) of the relevant subtests in html/, dom/, url/, and 73.2% (110,540/151,048) of the css/ subtests. The core engine is about 245,000 lines of C code, uses a separate process sandbox per tab, has no JIT and no telemetry, and has been dual-licensed under GPLv3 or the Nordstjernen Source License 1.0 since 1.0.28.
