Weekend Reading: Several Major Questions Raised by AI

The Economist called effective altruism (EA) "the biggest idea of this century" and questioned the notion held by some EAs in Silicon Valley that only they are worthy of being entrusted with powerful AI. The New York Times reported that Anthropic had consulted religious scholars and theologians on the question of machine consciousness, and that its team at one point proposed withdrawing from a Vatican event, while the papal encyclical Magnifica Humanitas explicitly stated that AI "does not experience, has no body, feels no joy or pain, and has no moral conscience."

CAS team uses AI to complete ten-loop calculation in maximally supersymmetric Yang–Mills theory

The team led by Song He at the Institute of Theoretical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, with AI assistance, completed nine- and ten-loop "symbol" calculations of the six-particle scattering amplitudes of both MHV and NMHV types in maximally supersymmetric Yang–Mills theory. The nine-loop actual run took no more than half a day, and the ten-loop calculation was completed within one day. Using the duality relation between the MHV amplitude and the three-point form factor, they obtained the ten-loop "symbol" result for the three-point form factor, with the number of terms reaching 538819472142. At almost the same time, Anthropic announced that it had used Claude to complete a nine-loop calculation, but obtained only the function result for one class of MHV amplitudes.
