UK announces establishment of AI biosecurity lab, backed by compute from OpenAI and Anthropic

The UK government announced the establishment of an AI biosecurity laboratory, which will receive £100 million in funding from the UK government, as well as support of up to a total of £200 million in technical resources such as compute from OpenAI and Anthropic. The laboratory will operate as an independent nonprofit institution, focusing on developing technologies to detect emerging biological threats early, and using AI to accelerate the R&D and testing of medical countermeasures such as vaccines and therapeutic drugs, while also conducting scientific research cooperation with Google DeepMind and UK biotechnology companies.
