On November 5, the General Office of the State Council issued a notice on the partial holiday arrangements for 2027. According to the notice, the 2027 Spring Festival will have 9 consecutive days off, on par with 2026, and only the Spring Festival, Labor Day and National Day involve make-up workdays for the whole year, with a total of 5 weekend make-up workdays.
In terms of specific arrangements, New Year's Day runs from January 1 to 3, for a total of 3 days off; the Spring Festival runs from February 5 (New Year's Eve) to 13 (the eighth day of the first lunar month) with adjusted days off, for a total of 9 days, with work on January 31 and February 14; Qingming Festival runs from April 3 to 5, for a total of 3 days off; Labor Day runs from May 1 to 5 with adjusted days off, for a total of 5 days, with work on May 8; Dragon Boat Festival has one day off on June 9; Mid-Autumn Festival has one day off on September 15; National Day runs from October 1 to 7 with adjusted days off, for a total of 7 days, with work on September 26 and October 9.
The General Office of the State Council also encourages units and individuals to combine paid annual leave to form longer holidays and to promote staggered travel. Source I don't even know how they have the nerve to promote next year's fewer make-up workdays as if they've given us more days off. The Wednesday day off is quite nice, it's actually just five days off hhh The reason there are fewer make-up workdays is that in 2027 more of the statutory holidays fall on Monday, Friday and Wednesday, not because they had a change of heart and took the initiative to reduce make-up workdays. Having some days off is already good enough; last year I only had 5 days off the entire October. If they could give me make-up days off I'd be overjoyed. Read all 7111 comments
OpenAI launches Images 2.6 model: supports GIF animation generation
November 5 news, OpenAI released its new-generation image generation model Images 2.6 on November 4 local time, bringing native GIF animation generation to ChatGPT. Users can now directly generate GIF animations through text prompts or by uploading static photos, and can adjust playback speed, view and edit frame by frame, and share the generated results.
Previously, ChatGPT did not support directly generating GIF animations. In OpenAI's demonstration, simply entering a prompt to make a cat dance generates the corresponding animation. In addition to the new GIF feature, Images 2.6 further improves the consistency of image editing, and the company says its image generation speed is about 50% faster than before.
Images 2.6 is now available to all ChatGPT and Codex subscribers worldwide. At the same time, OpenAI has also launched two models in the API, GPT-Image-2.6 Flare and Sunburst; the former focuses on generation speed, while the latter targets those with higher requirements for image quality, detail and editing consistency. JBL Professional releases 3 Series MkIII monitor speakers
On November 5, HARMAN Professional Solutions, a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics, recently launched the JBL Professional 3 Series MkIII family of powered studio monitor speakers, including three two-way monitors — the 5-inch 305P MkIII, the 6.5-inch 306P MkIII, and the 8-inch 308P MkIII — as well as the 10-inch 310S MkIII powered subwoofer. The company says the new products feature a redesigned acoustic system, upgraded Class D amplifiers, added room optimization features, and updated mounting options.
On the acoustics side, the new products use redesigned high-frequency drivers and the JBL Image Control Waveguide, which can widen the listening area and improve the stability of the stereo image. The low-frequency drivers use stiffer cone materials, upgraded magnetic circuit components, and aluminum shorting rings to increase power handling and reduce distortion. In addition, the front-firing JBL Slipstream port helps improve low-frequency performance when placed on a desk or against a wall.
All three monitors are equipped with a new Class D amplifier, a balanced Neutrik combo input connector, and selectable +4 dBu/-10 dBV input sensitivity, and also offer four one-touch room adjustment controls that provide 81 compensatory EQ combinations without the need for additional calibration software. Each model also features M4 mounting holes, supporting desktop, wall, ceiling, and stand mounting. The 310S MkIII subwoofer uses a 300W Class D amplifier, reaches a low-frequency extension down to 26 Hz (-10 dB), and supports multiple crossover settings and an external bass management bypass. The BL Professional 3 Series MkIII went on sale in Asia-Pacific, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa starting November 3, and is expected to go on sale in North America on January 7, 2027. Source 1
Moonshot AI opens Kimi K3.1 Pro model weights
On November 5, Moonshot AI today opened the Kimi K3.1 Pro model weights on the Hugging Face platform; developers can obtain the model through Hugging Face and deploy and use it under its dedicated license. According to statistics from the third-party evaluation platform Arena's Agent Arena leaderboard, Kimi K3.1 Pro (Max) ranks first among open-weight models and 14th among all evaluated models, and ranks first among open models in all three categories: work, coding, and chat.
In terms of model architecture, Kimi K3.1 Pro uses a mixture-of-experts (MoE) architecture with a total parameter count of 2.8 trillion, activating about 104 billion parameters per inference, and supports a context window of about 1 million tokens. Compared with Kimi K3, the new model was post-trained through large-scale joint reinforcement learning covering hundreds of downstream domains, and replaces some full-attention layers with gated sparse attention layers to reduce the overhead of long-context processing. Source Kimi's quota still burns too fast; I hope they add a tier between the 199 Pro tier and the 699 Max tier6
Game-adapted film "The Angry Birds Movie 3" releases official trailer
Paramount Pictures released the second official trailer for the game-adapted animated film "The Angry Birds Movie 3" on November 4 local time. App Store can show retention offers when unsubscribing
Apple announced on November 4 local time that it has officially launched a subscription retention feature in App Store Connect, allowing developers to display retention messages — including text, images, and exclusive offers — while users cancel an auto-renewable subscription, in order to reduce subscription churn.
According to Apple's official documentation, developers can create up to 10 retention messages for each app and associate them with one or more auto-renewable subscription items. Messages support three formats: plain text, text with images, or text with offers, where offers may include subscription discounts or free subscription periods. Developers can also set subscribers' offer eligibility conditions and the waiting time before the same offer can be claimed again.
In addition, Apple provides the Retention Messaging API, which allows developers, after obtaining permission, to decide in real time which retention content to display based on the user's subscription details. This feature was previously announced at WWDC26 and is now officially open for use. For users, when canceling a subscription they may see additional offers or benefit introductions, but they can still choose to continue and complete the cancellation process. Discord will rewrite its client in Rust
November 5 news: Discord co-founder and CTO Stanislav Vishnevskiy confirmed on X on November 4 local time that Discord is rewriting its client in the Rust language. The desktop version will replace the existing Electron with the GPUI framework, and the mobile version will also abandon React Native, moving to native interfaces and sharing some application code with the desktop version through Rust.
Vishnevskiy said that Discord has been using Rust since 2018, and that some infrastructure, voice technology, and existing client code already use the language; this refactor aims to further unify the client's technical architecture. He also revealed that the new client will retain the existing app's interface and interaction methods and will support logging into multiple accounts simultaneously.
Regarding performance, a screenshot of the Windows 11 Task Manager shared by Vishnevskiy shows that an early client codenamed "Discord Phoenix" used about 290.2 MB of memory, while two accounts were running simultaneously at the time. By comparison, tech media outlet Windows Latest observed on its own device that the existing Electron client used about 1–2 GB of memory. Currently, Discord has not announced a specific release date for the new client. Vishnevskiy said the team hopes to open testing to users as soon as possible. Source
It is worth noting that high memory usage does not necessarily make a computer run slowly. Pavan Davuluri, Microsoft's head of Windows and Devices, pointed out in an official blog post published on November 3 that Windows 11 actively uses idle memory to cache apps and data that may be used again, and reallocates it when other programs need resources; therefore, a high memory usage rate shown in Task Manager does not necessarily mean the system is short on memory.
Windows Latest subsequently tested in Windows 11 virtual machines configured with 4GB, 8GB, and 16GB of memory, respectively, and found that the system actually used about 2.4GB, 2.9GB, and 3.7GB of memory. In other words, Windows dynamically adjusts resource usage based on available memory capacity. However, the system actively using idle memory for caching is a different concept from an application's own memory overhead. When available memory remains insufficient and the system frequently accesses the page file, reducing an application's memory usage may still improve the multitasking experience.
