Goldman Sachs Tightens Access to AI Coding Tools Such as Claude Code, Some Traders Unhappy
In internal guidance updated in October, Goldman Sachs tightened access to Claude Code and Microsoft GitHub-related tools, mainly restricting them to use by engineers, which has drawn complaints from some traders. Previously, some traders relied on these tools to monitor client trading flows and simulate market and position changes; "strats" employees whose work spans trading, quantitative research and software engineering are not subject to this restriction. Goldman Sachs' own AI assistant, GS AI Assistant, integrates models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Alphabet.

Phoenix Tech News, November 3 — According to Bloomberg, Goldman Sachs has tightened access to AI coding tools such as Claude Code, prompting dissatisfaction among some traders. The bank had previously rolled out its own AI assistant firm-wide for employees to process documents, draft content, and analyze data.
Internal guidance updated in October and seen by Bloomberg shows that Claude Code and Microsoft GitHub-related tools, which Goldman previously allowed bankers to use, are now mainly restricted to engineers. "Strats" employees—who work at the intersection of trading, quantitative research, and software engineering—are not subject to the new restrictions.
People familiar with the matter said some traders had relied on these tools to monitor client trading flows, simulate market and position changes, and produce text and graphic content. In July of this year, Goldman Chief Information Officer Marco Argenti had also described how non-technical employees could use AI to develop solutions, which were then refined by engineers.
Goldman spokesperson Nick Carcaterra responded that the firm evaluates the uses of various AI tools across different departments through trials, weighing factors such as productivity and risk management, before determining who is suitable to use these tools long term.
Reuters previously reported that Goldman launched GS AI Assistant firm-wide in June 2025, when about 10,000 employees were already using it. Bloomberg's report noted that Goldman's own AI assistant integrates models from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google parent Alphabet. (Author/Song Shumei)
