Phoenix Tech News, October 21 — According to CNBC, OpenAI will let developers use its artificial intelligence models through Google Cloud. The move means OpenAI's models will land on all three major cloud infrastructure providers (Google, Microsoft, and Amazon). For OpenAI, this is a key step in expanding the distribution of its technology to enterprise developers and extending from its consumer business into a broader market.

Less than six months ago, OpenAI said Microsoft would no longer have an exclusive license to its intellectual property. The day after that exclusive agreement ended, cloud computing leader Amazon announced plans to host OpenAI's models. Now Google is joining in as well, bringing OpenAI's GPT products to its cloud platform's Model Garden and Antigravity coding tool within the next few weeks.

Google has grown strongly in cloud computing this year. In the second quarter, the annualized revenue growth rate for that business rose from 63% in the first quarter to about 82%, partly thanks to robust demand for AI models and custom chips. Over the same period, the cloud businesses of Amazon and Microsoft grew 37% and 42%, respectively. All three companies will report quarterly results next week.

According to data from corporate card issuer Ramp, most enterprise AI spending flows to OpenAI and Anthropic, though some corporate IT departments have already integrated Google's Gemini models into their own systems. In September, Google announced the launch of its next-generation Gemini 4 Argon model.

OpenAI was founded in 2015, partly with the original aim of counterbalancing the concentration of AI research at companies such as Google. Two years later, Google employees submitted the academic paper on the Transformer that drove AI forward, but it was OpenAI that brought the technology into application through ChatGPT. OpenAI is currently seeking funding at a $1.4 trillion valuation and is aiming for an initial public offering (IPO).

Google and OpenAI already collaborated last year, when OpenAI said it was using Google Cloud to run ChatGPT and its application programming interface (API).
