Masaharu Nakayama: China is Panasonic's core production base for AI business, will increase investment in Guangzhou and Suzhou

Beijing News Shell Finance Report (Reporter Chen Weicheng) — The 9th China International Import Expo (hereinafter referred to as the "CIIE") is about to be held. Before the event, Masaharu Nakayama, Executive Officer of Panasonic Holdings Corporation and Group Chief Executive for China and Northeast Asia, said in an interview with Beijing News Shell Finance and other media that for Panasonic's AI infrastructure business, China is a core production base, and the company will increase investment in its two major bases in Guangzhou and Suzhou.

As a "full-attendance" exhibitor for nine consecutive years, Panasonic's booth is divided into three major areas: the AI Infrastructure Components Exhibition Area, the Advanced Manufacturing and Solutions Exhibition Area, and the Healthy Intelligent Living Space Exhibition Area. Through scenario-based displays and technology experiences, it presents Panasonic's cross-business-segment business layout and technology implementation capabilities.

Against the backdrop of rapid AI technology evolution and simultaneous growth in computing power and energy demand, Panasonic is pursuing a layout around the two major directions of "computing power" and "electricity." As server power density rises rapidly, liquid cooling technology is becoming the new benchmark for heat dissipation in high-density computing scenarios. Panasonic has newly pioneered a new AIDC (Artificial Intelligence Data Center) liquid cooling business.

Panasonic launched its "1+N+X" smart sensing health space solution in China for the first time. Panasonic Reboot Space, which will be launched in April 2027, provides a brand-new lifestyle: with air as the foundation, it combines light, wind, fragrance, and sound to engage the five senses and create customized, immersive IAQ (indoor air quality) living spaces.

Nakayama Masaharu introduced that today's Panasonic Group has undergone earth-shaking changes in its business content compared with the past. For example, in Panasonic Group's overall revenue, home appliances, which used to be the largest portion, have fallen to about one-third, but progress has been made in the components and solutions fields.

Nakayama Masaharu said that in the face of issues of the times, Panasonic Group is focusing on three major areas: components, solutions, and smart living. For the components and solutions fields, Panasonic Group hopes to "at the very least maintain annual double-digit growth"; in the smart living field, Panasonic's goal is to "achieve global standard costs and enhance profitability and cost competitiveness," while both maintaining the Panasonic brand's "presence" in the two major home appliance markets of China and Japan and leveraging China's mature supply chain advantages to vigorously develop home appliance markets in Southeast Asia.

"Home appliances and housing-related products, that is, so-called durable consumer goods, will remain in a relatively severe situation for some time to come," Nakayama Masaharu admitted. He believes that in the mass market, it is no longer realistic for the home appliance business to seek comprehensive growth. But consumers are increasingly pursuing quality products, and this is Panasonic's opportunity. In addition, healthy elderly care living spaces are also a development focus in Panasonic's smart living field.

In addition, Panasonic Group CEO Yuki Kusumi told the media that the smart living field, namely the home appliance business, will play an important role in leading the Panasonic Group's brand development. The "AI infrastructure support" business mainly focuses on the components field, providing "brain" and "heart" support for AI servers deployed in generative AI data centers. Through these business layouts, it will meet the rapidly growing market demand for generative AI data centers. Looking ahead, it is believed that these technologies will also expand their service scope to edge computing fields such as AI-driven autonomous driving and robotics.
