OpenAI Engineer Arrested for Allegedly Installing Eavesdropping Device; Employees Say They Warned of Security Vulnerabilities for Years

The U.S. Department of Justice said federal law enforcement officers arrested OpenAI engineer Abdulrahman Alfouzan, accusing him of installing a hidden recording device concealed in toilet paper in an executive meeting room. Five people familiar with the matter said that as early as late 2022, before ChatGPT was launched, some employees had reported to senior management and the board that security controls were too lax and that outsiders could relatively easily obtain sensitive technical information. An OpenAI spokesperson responded that the company is one of the most targeted institutions in the world and has invested heavily in its security program; senior management member Thibault Sottiaux recently led an initiative to strengthen internal system security, and in August of this year reassigned a quarter of its production engineers to improve security infrastructure.
