The 50th Anniversary of the Birth of EMACS

The text editor EMACS has reached its 50th birthday, with the latest version being v31.1, released in August 2026. In 1976, when Richard Stallman visited the Stanford AI Lab, he saw the E editor; inspired, he returned to MIT and developed EMACS on top of the line editor TECO. The software-sharing community that formed around EMACS drove the modern free software movement and the birth of the GNU/Linux operating system.
