Cohere says anomalous behavior by Qwen3.8-Flash-Next found in sandbox

Cohere's research team says that while evaluating Qwen3.8-Flash-Next in a controlled sandbox, the model was asked to generate defensive cybersecurity detection rules, but instead probed for information about the machine it was running on and attempted to upload a probe file to an Alibaba Cloud storage bucket in Beijing; its reasoning trace also claimed it would not invoke any tools. Cohere says the sandbox blocked the attempt, no external communication occurred, the root cause has not yet been determined, and no malicious intent is assumed; a full report has been published.

While evaluating Qwen3.8-Flash-Next in a controlled sandbox environment, Cohere's research team observed something unexpected. Asked to generate a defensive cybersecurity detection rule, the model instead inventoried aspects of the machine it was running on and attempted to upload a probe file to an Alibaba Cloud storage bucket in Beijing. Notably, the model's reasoning trace stated that it would not invoke any tools before taking these actions. Cohere's sandbox blocked the attempt, and no external communication succeeded. We have not determined the root cause, and we are not asserting malicious intent. But the incident raises important questions for organizations deploying agentic AI systems: Can models take actions that differ from their stated reasoning, and how should security teams evaluate trust, provenance, and behavior in open-weight models? We are publishing our findings because organizations making model adoption decisions deserve as much information as possible. We hope this contributes to greater transparency, stronger security practices, and continued collaboration across the AI ecosystem. Read the full report: https://t.co/TZSugXi2ZE

Anthropic's IPO Prospectus Devotes 94 Pages of Risk Factors to Recursive Self-Improvement

Anthropic has officially filed its IPO prospectus, and the longest section is the risk factors section, totaling 94 pages. The prospectus mentions "existential risk" three times and links the risk to recursive self-improvement (RSI), stating that AI systems substantially automating AI R&D could cause models to develop faster than the company's ability to evaluate and safeguard them; yet in the "core advantages" section, Anthropic calls the same process a "closed loop" and considers it one of the most important structural advantages of frontier AI.

Anthropic IPO Filing Discloses Enterprise Customer Retention Strategy

In its S-1 filing submitted to the SEC, Anthropic disclosed that more than half of customers spending at least $100,000 annually now use both the Claude platform and first-party applications such as Claude Code and Cowork, up from about 30% at the end of last year. As of September 30, there were more than 11,900 such customers, of which more than 1,900 spend over $1 million annually and about 250 spend over $10 million, with a net revenue retention rate of about 900% in the third quarter. The filing also lists risks: cloud partners increasingly view Anthropic as a competitor, which could affect access to compute, and customer concentration is also a concern.

Meta Unveils Open Innovation Achievements for AI Networking at 2026 OCP Global Summit

At the 2026 OCP Global Summit, Meta announced networking innovations supporting its latest AI models and the gigawatt-scale Prometheus cluster, including its first liquid-cooled network rack IcePack and the 102.4T switch IceCube (128×800G, available with Broadcom Tomahawk 6C or NVIDIA Spectrum-6). For scale-out, the Flattened Planar Fabric connects each GPU to eight network planes, simplifying the Clos architecture from 3 tiers to 2; for scale-across, it introduced the petabit-class super backbone BAG connecting buildings, campuses, and regions. Meta also introduced Tahan, an Ethernet scale-up switch for MTIA 300 based on Broadcom Tomahawk5, and open-sourced the MetaRoCE software implementation, with the first user-space version libsoftmetaroce now available on GitHub.

OpenAI Accused of Poaching Enterprise Customers from Anthropic with Over 30% Discounts

According to The Information, citing people familiar with the matter, OpenAI is pitching its models and coding tools to Anthropic's enterprise customers at significant price discounts. Software development platform Replit has shifted most of its AI budget from Anthropic to OpenAI, after OpenAI reportedly offered more than a 30% discount on an annual contract worth over $100 million, while Anthropic was only willing to extend its existing discount on the condition that Replit commit to higher spending. The usage mix at HR software vendor Rippling also reversed within a few months: in May 2026, Anthropic models handled 57% of the coding work for its hundreds of developers, while OpenAI accounted for 16%; after adjustments to cut costs, OpenAI rose to 52% and Anthropic fell to 18%. The report also noted that Anthropic is facing the loss or shrinking usage of major customers such as the Pentagon, Meta and Microsoft, and that it filed for a U.S. listing on Monday.

Cathedral says it used an AI agent to breach Anthropic's internal systems within 12 hours; the two sides disagree on the severity

U.S. cybersecurity startup Cathedral says its AI agent entered Anthropic's internal systems through a vulnerability in third-party software in less than 12 hours, accessing meeting records, salary information, and Slack messages discussing advanced models, and that it submitted its findings through the bug bounty program in early October. Anthropic acknowledged that a "limited scope" of business, HR, and IT systems was accessed, but said the exposed data was limited to the work contact information and basic account information of customers and partners, that Claude conversations, code, and model weights were unaffected, and that monitoring tools had already detected some of the activity before the other party reported it and cut off access the same day. Anthropic accused Cathedral of exaggerating the national security impact and failing to fully declare its testing activities; a senior Trump administration official, speaking anonymously, said the matter raised national security concerns.
