Latent Space announces AIE CODE coding agent conference curation themes

Latent Space host swyx introduces the curation approach for the annual flagship conference AIE CODE, which is single-track, invitation-only, and aimed at about 1,000 agent engineers. This year's three themes are Scaling without Slop, System One models, and Increasing Ambition, among which Jarred Sumner will share Bun's rewrite in Rust and a Bun AOT preview. The article also rounds up that day's AI news, including Mistral's open-weight release and OpenAI's frontier model monitoring.

a16z Survey of 100 CISOs: How AI Is Rewriting the 2027 Security Agenda

a16z's survey of 100 CISOs at companies with more than 1,000 employees shows that 87% expect cybersecurity spending to increase, driven mainly by AI-related threats and the expanded attack surface from enterprises' own AI deployments. All seven of the most-watched security initiatives for 2027 are AI-related; SOC automation received the most first-priority votes, but only 18% have put AI SOC tools into production. 45% plan to make new purchases or upgrades within 12 months for internal AI agent security, and 42% plan to procure offensive security capabilities.

Partnership on AI research: Agent frameworks generally lack observability records

Madhulika Srikumar and Claire Leibowicz of Partnership on AI write that current agent frameworks cannot reliably generate the key observability records needed for safe deployment. Together with colleagues from academia, civil society, and industry, the authors studied the four most widely used agent frameworks and found that signals such as persistent Agent IDs and human approval records are missing, making it difficult to determine which agent did what and whether it exceeded its authority. The article recommends using OpenTelemetry to fill in the records of "what happened," and calls on framework developers, enterprises adopting agents, and regulators to each bear their respective responsibilities.

Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt Says OpenAI and Anthropic Are Like Modern Colonial Trading Companies

Historian Niall Ferguson, researcher Lisa Klaassen, and former Google CEO Eric Schmidt wrote in Foreign Affairs, comparing OpenAI and Anthropic to colonial-era East India Companies, arguing that they negotiate with governments but remain constrained by them. The article cites the example of the U.S. Commerce Department in June requiring Anthropic to cut off foreign nationals' access to its two most powerful models; because Anthropic could not verify users' nationalities in real time, it took Fable 5 and Mythos 5 offline worldwide. About two weeks later, export controls on Fable 5 were lifted, while Mythos 5 remains available only to certain U.S. institutions. The authors also say U.S. tech companies plan to invest more than $600 billion in 2026, much of it debt-financed, while China plans to invest $295 billion over five years, and they propose an "imperial trilemma" in which defense, technological leadership, and the welfare state are difficult to achieve at the same time.

Azeem Azhar: AI is turning old vulnerabilities into serious problems, and the internet will become safer but more closed

Azeem Azhar believes the current internet is under intense attack, with AI greatly increasing the scale and speed of exploiting old vulnerabilities; PHP2Shell, Node.js vulnerabilities, and the AI agent cluster intrusion disclosed by Microsoft are contemporaneous cases. He cites Cloudflare head Matthew Prince's prediction that within five years the number of AI agents will reach 1,000 times the number of human users, and judges that attacks will worsen first, with the internet ultimately left safer but less open. The article also mentions that Anthropic once delayed the release of Claude Mythos, while the open-source model GLM 5.3 had by August approached its level.

Gary Marcus: US Banks Are Under Attack by AI Agents

Gary Marcus, citing an Axios report, said that US banks are tightening system access permissions due to AI agent attacks, and that bank executives are alarmed by these findings. He also mentioned that the attack on France's refrigeration system on October 11 may have been facilitated by agents, as well as the continuously increasing cybersecurity attacks in Japan. He believes that attackers do not need the most advanced frontier models to cause damage, and therefore regulation should not focus only on frontier models and future risks.
