IEEE Spectrum White Paper: How Edge AI Moves Smart Cities Toward Cognitive Cities

IEEE Spectrum has released a white paper describing how edge AI and physical AI can move urban infrastructure from passive monitoring to sensing, reasoning, and acting in real time. According to the white paper, edge AI enables low-latency decision-making, keeps sensitive data within city boundaries, and reduces reliance on centralized cloud; computer vision, multimodal sensing, and generative and agentic systems can work together to support public safety, mobility, and infrastructure management. The paper also describes a layered edge architecture that distributes monitoring, planning, and action tasks across the far edge, regional, and cloud layers.

Hands-on comparison of three AI office apps: Doubao Work, Qwen Office, and WorkBuddy

Reporters from The Beijing News Shell Finance conducted a series of hands-on task tests on three AI office apps—Doubao Work, Qwen Office, and WorkBuddy—using the Doubao 2.1 Lite0921, Qwen3.87-Max, and Hy4 preview models, respectively. In the long-horizon task from the "2026 AI Office Sector Research Report," Doubao Work produced 10,000 words in 20 minutes 46 seconds, WorkBuddy produced 25,000 words in 21 minutes 18 seconds, and Qwen Office took over 1 hour to produce 50,000 words but consumed about 1,800 tokens, roughly 60 times that of the other two, requiring the reporter to top up 78 yuan to purchase a membership. In the multimodal tests, Doubao Work's poster and video had the highest degree of completion, and the 3D model generated by WorkBuddy was the closest to the original figurine, but when generating a comic it mistook its own icon for a teal pig face.

Microsoft launches biological world model Quine, multiple giants double down on AI4S

Microsoft Research has launched an experimental AI research system, Quine, building a biological multimodal world model covering genomics, proteins, chemistry, RNA, cell states, and biological imaging, and constructing an interactive harness framework that connects models, scientific tools, literature, and researchers. Microsoft has partnered with the Broad Institute, jointly established by MIT and Harvard University, to apply Quine to cancer biology research. In one case, it completed the predictive ranking of the effects of thousands of compounds on pancreatic cancer cell states over a single weekend, saving months of experimental work, but the system is still in an early research stage. In addition, Anthropic established a life sciences research team and laboratory on September 23, OpenAI launched GPT-Rosalind for life sciences in April this year, and Nvidia announced in January this year a joint effort with Eli Lilly to build an AI innovation laboratory.
