Microsoft Research proves the 31-year-old unsolved KLS conjecture

Microsoft Research researcher Xinzhi Zhang and co-authors proved the KLS conjecture proposed in 1995, giving a dimension-independent fixed bound; the previous best result only allowed the bound to grow slowly with dimension. The proof came from a human-guided agent search process, in which the team explored more than 100 candidate paths, with researchers evaluating, pruning, and redirecting them; an independent team also gave a complete proof at the same time, followed by Lean 4 formal verification. The authors say earlier unguided end-to-end attempts with multiple frontier models failed to achieve the goal.

Google Research uses AI to assist blind-sweep ultrasound assessment of gestational age, with error comparable to experts

Google Research published a study in JAMA Network Open; its AI gestational age assessment model based on blind-sweep ultrasound achieved a mean absolute error of 4.18 days in prospective testing in Chicago (n=192) and Nairobi (n=193), reaching non-inferiority compared with expert sonographers' 4.48 days. The model was fine-tuned only on data from 120 participants in Chicago and did not use Nairobi data; the errors in the two locations were 4.10 days and 4.27 days, respectively. The study used a Clarius C3 handheld probe, with standardized blind sweeps performed by operators without professional ultrasound training.

Bar chart comparing the mean absolute error between the AI model and expert clinical standards across multiple cohorts.

Profiling TorchNeuron (Part 1): System-Level Performance Profiling on AWS Trainium

AWS has released Part 1 of the TorchNeuron profiling guide, which explains how to use NeuronConfig and NeuronProfiler for system-level profiling on AWS Trainium, and how to view system traces, device timelines, and per-engine breakdowns through Neuron Explorer. Taking RMSNorm as an example, a naive PyTorch implementation has a total device time of 2.355 ms, while torch.rms_norm(), fused into a single Neuron kernel, reduces this to 403.3 μs.

Cohere releases Rerank 5 Pro and Fast retrieval models

Cohere releases enterprise retrieval model Rerank 5, in Pro and Fast tiers, now available on Cohere API, Model Vault, Microsoft Foundry and Amazon SageMaker, with Pro priced at $0.05 per 1M tokens and Fast at $0.02. Cohere says Rerank 5 Pro leads all tested models on four public benchmarks: ViDoRe V3, nanoMTEB, BRIGHT and BEIR, ranking first on 39 of 46 composite datasets. The new Context Focus feature can return the most relevant text snippets within a document in a single call; in official tests, removing half the context lost only 2 percentage points of answer quality.

China's Ministry of Commerce plans to include AI models in the export control catalog

China's Ministry of Commerce and Ministry of Science and Technology issued Announcement No. 48 of 2026 on October 16, proposing to add 40 items to the Catalogue of Technologies Prohibited or Restricted from Export in China, of which 14 are prohibited from export and 26 are restricted from export, and to implement pre-export registration for all newly added technologies effective immediately. The draft sets three thresholds for frontier models: ≥10^26 FLOP, ≥2T parameters, or reaching a globally leading level, and also covers AI chip design, memory chips, ten-thousand-card-level clusters, agents, AIGC detection tools, training data, and cyber offense and defense capabilities; scenarios such as open source, self-built overseas data centers, and overseas tape-out may use the report-and-export channel. The public comment period runs until November 15.

Deepinder Goyal teases privacy-first AI platform Dark.ai, plans global launch in 2026

Eternal founder Deepinder Goyal has teased the privacy-first AI platform Dark.ai, which is planned for a global launch in 2026. The platform runs fine-tuned open-weight models on Eternal's own infrastructure, offering end-to-end encryption and encrypted memory management, so that context can persist across sessions and remain under user control. Goyal says the company cannot read users' conversations, even if compelled to do so. Target users include founders, researchers, enterprises, and government agencies.
