What is an open-weight AI model?
Open-weight models make their trained weights publicly available for download. Users can run them locally with desktop applications such as LM Studio, Ollama, and Jan, with no subscription fee, and prompts and files do not pass through AI vendors' servers. Pierre Stock, Vice President of Science at Mistral, points out that once weights are made public, access to them can hardly be cut off. Open weights are not the same as open source: under the OSI definition, developers must also publish the training and runtime code, provide sufficient information about the training data, and allow use, study, modification, and sharing. Currently, the Artificial Analysis open-weight intelligence ranking is led by Chinese models, including DeepSeek, Moonshot AI's Kimi K3, and Alibaba's Qwen3.8 series.
