Canonical Restarts Ubuntu Core Desktop: Based on core26, Targeting Browsers, Developers, and Gaming Scenarios
Canonical has restarted the stalled Ubuntu Core Desktop project, upgrading the immutable system base to core26 and abandoning the 2023 prototype's approach of packaging GDM, GNOME, and Firefox into a single core22 Snap in favor of a modular Snap architecture. The new team will first focus on three scenarios: browser desktops, developer workstations, and gaming PCs, and will introduce Permissions Prompting runtime authorization based on AppArmor and snapd. The developer scenario will use LXD and Canonical Workshop to run Classic-mode tools such as VS Code, and Workshop will be converted into a strictly confined Snap in the coming weeks.
