New platforms target gateways, network security, wireless infrastructure, and fixed wireless access

Qualcomm unveiled four artificial intelligence (AI)-powered broadband technologies on Oct. 12 ahead of Network X 2026.

The technologies include a next-generation AI gateway, an intelligent software framework, high-speed wireless distribution and backhaul platforms, and a fixed wireless access (FWA) platform.

All four combine on-device AI processing with network intelligence. The approach embeds intelligent processing across the network to improve responsiveness and security while simplifying operations for telecommunications operators.

The next-generation AI gateway is powered by Qualcomm’s Dragonwing NPro A8 Elite Platform. The system-on-chip (SoC) integrates concurrent quad-band 4x4 Wi-Fi 8 connectivity, a penta-core central processing unit (CPU), and a high-performance Qualcomm Hexagon neural processing unit (NPU).

The platform also enables symmetrical broadband speeds of 20 gigabits per second (Gbps) for both uploads and downloads. The capability was developed through collaboration with GFiber, the internet service provider owned by Alphabet.

Qualcomm also introduced Dragonwing Security and Management (SAM), an intelligent software framework designed to strengthen network security and management. It integrates device intelligence to monitor connected devices, service intelligence to assess and optimize quality of experience (QoE), security services to defend against threats, and cloud intelligence that combines external big data with AI-powered analysis.

Dragonwing SAM adopts an open software architecture. Rather than being restricted to specific equipment or chips, it can be deployed flexibly across multiple gateways and network environments. The framework also supports third-party software. It is designed to give operators greater visibility into broadband networks and help them deliver secure, high-quality AI-powered connectivity.

Qualcomm also unveiled the Dragonwing Point-to-Multi-Point (PtMP) and Point-to-Point (PtP) platforms, wireless transmission solutions for expanding base stations and telecommunications infrastructure. The PtMP platform distributes radio signals from a central base station or transmission tower to multiple receiving devices, providing high-speed internet to multiple users. It serves as a distribution network. The PtP platform provides high-capacity wireless backhaul links between base stations using licensed spectrum.

Both platforms operate with Qualcomm’s custom millimeter-wave (mmWave) access points (APs) and customer premises equipment (CPE). CPE acts as a modem, receiving radio signals from a transmission tower and forwarding them to a router, such as a home Wi-Fi router. The platforms use a time-division multiple access (TDMA) scheduler that divides transmission opportunities into time slots to reduce latency. They also incorporate multi-standard frame synchronization technology to reduce interference between signals using different standards.

Qualcomm also introduced its next-generation Dragonwing FWA Gen 6 Elite Platform. The solution receives standard 5G wireless signals from base stations and delivers high-speed wired and wireless internet connectivity indoors.

Based on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X105 5G Modem-RF System, the platform supports 5G Advanced and non-terrestrial network (NTN) capabilities. NTN technology enables communication with satellites without relying on terrestrial base stations.

The platform also features tri-band Wi-Fi 8, which operates across three frequency bands, and Qualcomm’s fifth-generation 5G AI Processor. It is designed to adapt in real time to changing radio conditions and maintain optimal connectivity. The technology could extend high-performance broadband access to remote areas.

Gautam Sheoran, Qualcomm’s senior vice president and general manager of Connectivity, Broadband and Networking, said broadband networks were evolving from basic connectivity platforms into intelligent service platforms. As AI becomes more deeply embedded in consumer and enterprise environments, operators need networks that do more than simply transmit data, he said.

Qualcomm plans to demonstrate the physical platforms and their capabilities at Network X 2026. The global telecommunications and infrastructure exhibition runs from Oct. 13 to 15 in Vienna, Austria.
