HD Hyundai has successfully demonstrated autonomous navigation technology for an unmanned surface vessel (USV) in collaboration with US artificial intelligence (AI) defense company Anduril.

HD Hyundai announced on Oct. 19 that it had recently conducted a joint demonstration with Anduril off the Port of Long Beach in California. It marked the first time a South Korean company had demonstrated unmanned surface vessel technology in the United States.

The companies tested the technology aboard a modified 368-ton large unmanned surface test vessel previously operated by the US Navy. The vessel was equipped with HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering’s VAone vessel autonomy solution and Anduril’s Lattice mission autonomy system.

VAone, based on autonomous navigation technology developed by HD Hyundai subsidiary Avikus, can detect machinery conditions and damage aboard a vessel and respond automatically. Anduril’s Lattice supports autonomous mission execution by unmanned surface vessels.

During the approximately three-and-a-half-hour demonstration, the companies tested autonomous navigation, mission changes, formation operations and emergency responses to machinery failures. HD Hyundai and Anduril plan to use the validated technologies to enter the global unmanned surface vessel market, including the United States.

“We confirmed the unmanned surface vessel’s ability to perform complex missions in response to various real-world operational scenarios,” said Jang Kwang-pil, vice president and head of the Future Technology Research Institute at HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering. “We will continue to focus on technology development and advancement.”
