The OS was ready. What held the product back was Siri.
HomeHub, which Apple unveils on Oct 13 along with a smart-home push with LG, is built around voice. According to our source, Apple's smart-home hardware team would not sign off on a device whose main interface was Siri, given how badly Siri had performed for years.
What changed their minds was large language models. Once LLMs made Siri noticeably better at understanding natural speech, the team decided the timing was finally right.
So Tuesday's launch is less about a new screen for your kitchen. It's the first Apple product that shipped only because Siri finally improved.
