Open-weight models did not start the drop in price per unit of intelligence. They are a tailwind on a trend that was already underway.
For the last few years, a few factors have driven price drops:
1/ Model builders distilling their best models into smaller ones, with cheaper inference
2/ Infra efficiency
3/ Competition between model providers
You can see this pattern with every model company: Version x of the mid-size model = intelligence of version x-1 of the large model. Same intelligence for less $.
