OpenAI Releases 722 AI-Generated Mathematics Manuscripts; Mathematicians Would Need Years to Read Them All

On October 7, OpenAI published 722 mathematics manuscripts produced by the same internal model on GitHub, covering 17 branches of mathematics and claiming results on 372 sets of unresolved problems. Among them, a weakened version of the Riemann hypothesis (no zeros in the region where the real part is greater than 7/8) was described by Rutgers University mathematician Kontorovich as something that, if done by a human, would immediately win the Fields Medal, while the planar coloring problem was reduced to 6 or 7 colors. On the second day after release, OpenAI withdrew 3 papers and patched 14; as of October 10, about 42% of the results had passed Lean machine verification, and mathematicians estimate that it would take years to fully understand all the manuscripts.

    GitHub releases Octoverse report

GitHub released the Octoverse report on October 28. The report states that 1.3 billion pull requests were merged over the past twelve months, averaging 3.5 million per day, triple the figure for the same period last year; more than 40% of pull requests began with an agent-drafted opening, compared with 17% in March 2026; projects containing an AGENTS.md file received eight times as many commits as projects without such a file. TypeScript and Python each have about 13 million monthly contributors, tying as the most popular languages, with JavaScript close behind at 7.4 million; platform users grew to 225 million, with Germany ranking eighth at 6.3 million. Another report states that the report disclosed that merged pull requests grew to 220 million per month in less than a year, commits grew to 7.38 billion per month, and the rate of new repository creation doubled to 30.3 million per month.
