AI Infra Summit Discusses Space Data Centers: Technical and Cost Barriers Still Need to Be Overcome

At the AI Infra Summit, executives from companies including Viasat, Cowboy Space, and Star Catcher discussed the obstacles to deploying orbital data centers with the U.S. Air Force CIO: heat dissipation, uplink and downlink bandwidth, and launch costs. Viasat's Sumeet Singh pointed out that launch costs need to drop from $2,500 to $3,000 per kilogram to about $200 to $500 to be economically viable. U.S. Air Force CIO Deepak Sachdeva said the technology does not yet meet the latency, resilience, and security requirements needed for global operations, and suggested starting with a proof of concept.

Zombie workloads drag down data center efficiency, and in the GPU era AI is spurring new cleanup methods

IDCA research shows that as much as 13% of US cloud usage comes from abandoned yet still-running zombie workloads, while FinOps vendors such as Broadcom and AWS estimate that overall cloud waste often reaches 25% to 30% or even higher. GPUs are more expensive than CPU cores, and idle GPUs turn inefficiencies that were once just a rounding error on the bill into real costs. Graziano Casto of Akamas says that in the LLM era, the cost of ignoring inefficiency has risen by an order of magnitude almost overnight. Kubernetes is evolving to support AI workloads, but the related work is still in its early stages.
