Samsung SDS is building an artificial intelligence (AI) data center in Gumi, North Gyeongsang Province, with the potential to expand capacity to 120 megawatts (MW). The project marks a concrete step toward implementing Samsung Group’s 60 trillion won investment plan for the Yeongnam region, announced in July 2026.

Samsung SDS announced on Nov. 2 that it will build a dedicated AI data center on a 46,280-square-meter site in Gongdan-dong, Gumi. The facility will initially have a power capacity of 60MW, with plans to expand it in phases to a maximum of 120MW depending on future demand for AI infrastructure.

According to the company, the Gumi AI data center received construction approval from the Gumi municipal government in late August 2026. Completion is targeted for the end of 2028, with operations scheduled to begin in March 2029.

The project is being developed on the site of Samsung Electronics’ former Gumi Plant 1, which Samsung SDS purchased in December 2024. On Jan. 2, 2026, Samsung SDS’s board approved an investment of 427.3 billion won to build the data center. Later that month, the company signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with North Gyeongsang Province and Gumi City at CES 2026 in Las Vegas.

The approved investment covers construction of the data center building and installation of certain facilities. It excludes additional AI computing equipment, such as graphics processing unit (GPU) servers, meaning total investment could increase as the project expands.

The Gumi AI data center will be designed to optimize the operation of high-performance GPU servers. It will incorporate hybrid cooling technology combining air and liquid cooling.

Air cooling will be used for network and storage equipment that generates relatively little heat, while liquid cooling will be applied to high-density GPU servers. The facility will also be equipped with high-capacity power supply infrastructure and emergency backup power systems.

Samsung SDS also plans to diversify its business model. It will offer GPU computing services using servers it installs and operates directly, alongside colocation services that allow external customers to install and use their own GPU equipment.

The facility will also support manufacturing and robotics transformation (RX) projects at Samsung affiliates. It will provide infrastructure for AI training of robots used in manufacturing facilities and large-scale data processing.

The Gumi data center is also linked to Samsung Group’s broader investment plans for the Yeongnam region.

At a public briefing on its vision for advanced industrial development in the Yeongnam region, held at Gyeongsang National University in Jinju, South Gyeongsang Province, on July 3, 2026, Samsung announced plans to invest approximately 60 trillion won in the region to establish a global physical AI innovation cluster.

The plan includes establishing a humanoid robot mass-production system, a robot data factory and an AI data center in Gumi; expanding all-solid-state battery production facilities in Ulsan; and increasing production capacity for semiconductor package substrates used in AI servers and multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) in Busan. In Geoje, Samsung plans to develop an autonomous shipyard using AI and robotics technologies.

During its third-quarter earnings conference call on Oct. 29, Samsung SDS outlined plans to expand its AI infrastructure capacity to more than 800MW by 2031. Revenue from the company’s cloud business reached 796.1 billion won in the third quarter, up 18% from a year earlier.
